Pet insurance that pays the vet directly

Most pet insurance reimburses you after you pay. A few insurers can pay the vet instead. Here is who.

The short answer

A few can: Pets Best offers Vet Direct Pay on all plans, Spot pays the vet if you ask on the claim form, Healthy Paws can if you request it before treatment, and Odie only where it has an arrangement with that vet.

Embrace, Fetch and Lemonade reimburse you after you pay the vet yourself.

What this means for your dog

Direct payment helps with the bill you can't put on a card: emergency surgery for a fracture, bloat or a torn ligament. It is worth more for dogs with an emergency condition on their breed list, like bloat in the Great Dane, Mastiff or German Shepherd, or cruciate tears in the Rottweiler.

It usually needs planning. Healthy Paws asks you to request it before treatment, Spot needs it marked on the claim form, and your vet has to agree to wait for the insurer. Ask your clinic whether it works with your insurer before an emergency happens.

Even with direct payment, you still owe your share: the deductible, your part of the reimbursement percentage and anything not covered. How a bill is split.

Before you buy

  • Ask whether direct payment is automatic or must be requested, and when.
  • Check with your own vet clinic that it accepts payment from your insurer.
  • Remember you still pay your deductible and your share of the bill.
  • Keep a card or savings ready for the part the insurer does not pay.

Questions owners ask

Among the insurers we compare, Pets Best (Vet Direct Pay), Spot (if requested on the claim form) and Healthy Paws (if requested before treatment) can pay the vet directly; Odie can where it has an arrangement with the vet.

Does Embrace, Fetch or Lemonade pay the vet directly?

Yes. You still owe your deductible, your share of the bill above the reimbursement percentage, and any costs the policy does not cover.
