Pet insurance annual limits compared
The most an insurer will pay in a policy year. Some offer unlimited, others cap it. Here are the published options, insurer by insurer.
Updated October 2, 2026. Plan facts come from each insurer's published documents; each insurer's policy documents control.
The short answer
Embrace, Healthy Paws, Pets Best and Spot publish an unlimited annual limit option; Fetch, Lemonade and Odie publish capped options only, topping out at $15,000, $100,000 and $40,000 respectively.
The annual limit is the most the policy pays in one policy year; anything above it is yours to pay, and it resets at renewal.

What this means for your dog
One serious episode can use up a low limit. Surgery for a torn cruciate ligament, treatment for cancer or an emergency for bloat are the claims that test it, and they are most common in large and giant breeds such as the Labrador Retriever, Rottweiler, Great Dane and Bernese Mountain Dog.
A higher limit costs more each month, and the difference between a high cap and unlimited is often small next to the protection it adds. If you pick a capped plan, choose the highest limit you can afford rather than the lowest.
Choose carefully at the start. Embrace says you can lower your limit anytime but raising it requires a new policy, and Healthy Paws says the limit you choose at enrollment can't be increased later. A new policy can treat conditions your dog already has as pre-existing.
A simple way to choose: think of the largest single bill you could not pay from savings, then pick a limit comfortably above it. Remember that the limit applies to what the insurer pays after your deductible and reimbursement share, not to the full bill, and that a second condition in the same year draws from the same limit.
Before you buy
- Check whether the limit is per policy year, per condition or for the life of the policy.
- Ask whether you can raise the limit later, and what happens to existing conditions if you do.
- Compare the monthly price of the next limit up; the step to unlimited is often smaller than expected.
- Make sure the limit you pick is well above the largest bill you could not pay yourself.
Questions owners ask
Which pet insurers offer unlimited annual coverage?
Among the insurers we compare, Embrace, Healthy Paws, Pets Best and Spot publish an unlimited annual limit option. Fetch, Lemonade and Odie publish capped limits only.
What happens when I reach my annual limit?
The policy stops paying for the rest of that policy year, and you pay any further bills yourself. The limit resets when the policy renews.
Can I raise my annual limit later?
Not always. Embrace says increasing the limit requires a new policy, and Healthy Paws says the limit chosen at enrollment cannot be increased later.
Is a per-condition or lifetime limit different from an annual limit?
Yes. An annual limit caps payouts per policy year across all conditions. Spot, for example, says its accident and illness plans have no per-incident limits or lifetime caps.
