The short answer

Embrace, Odie, Pets Best and Spot sell accident-only plans; Fetch and Healthy Paws don't, and we found none on Lemonade's pages. Embrace's plan pays up to $5,000 a year at 90% after a $100 deductible, and Odie's up to $10,000 at 90% after $250.

Accident-only plans cover injuries such as fractures, bites and swallowed objects, not illnesses.

What this means for your dog

An accident-only plan leaves out the claims many breeds are insured for: hereditary and chronic illness. Hip dysplasia in a German Shepherd, breathing problems in a French Bulldog or heart disease in a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel are illnesses, so the plan won't pay.

It makes sense in a few cases: a very active working dog, like a Border Collie or Belgian Malinois, when full cover is out of budget; an older dog whose illness cover would be expensive or exclude too much (Embrace moves dogs 15 and older to accident-only); or as a stopgap while you save.

If you can afford accident and illness cover, it protects against far more. Is dog insurance worth it?

Check how the plan handles knee injuries. Several insurers treat cruciate ligament events under their own rules: Pets Best, Lemonade and Odie apply a six-month waiting period to them, and Spot groups ligament and knee conditions together. A sudden knee injury is not always handled like a broken leg.

Before you buy

  • Read the list of what counts as an accident, and what is treated as an illness.
  • Check the fixed terms: annual limit, deductible and reimbursement.
  • Ask whether you can switch to accident and illness cover later, and how pre-existing conditions are treated then.
  • Compare the price difference with full cover before deciding.
