What this means for your dog

Being a mix does not mean being free of inherited problems. A UC Davis study of more than 27,000 dogs found 13 of 24 genetic disorders equally common in purebred and mixed-breed dogs, and cruciate ligament rupture more common in mixed breeds[7][8]. So the claims that matter most, like a torn knee ligament or hip dysplasia, apply to mixes too.

Insurers ask about mixes in different ways: Odie has you choose mixed breed and a size, and others ask for the closest breed. Answer the way your vet records describe your dog, since an insurer reviewing a claim will look at those records. Popular crosses have their own pages here, with estimates and conditions: Labradoodle, Goldendoodle, Cockapoo, and the general mixed breed page.

Hereditary and congenital conditions are covered by accident and illness plans for mixes on the same terms as purebreds: they must not be pre-existing. Hereditary cover, by insurer.

Before you buy

  • Ask how the insurer prices a mix: by size, by a parent breed, or both.
  • Use the same breed or size description your vet records show.
  • Check hereditary and orthopedic terms; they apply to mixes too.
  • Compare at least two insurers, since mix pricing varies.
