Does pet insurance cover pregnancy and breeding?
Breeding is excluded almost everywhere. What each policy says, and the exception worth knowing.
Updated October 6, 2026. Plan facts come from each insurer's published documents; each insurer's policy documents control.
The short answer
No: all seven insurers we could check exclude breeding, pregnancy and whelping costs. Fetch is a partial exception, covering complications if breeding happens after the policy's waiting period.

What this means for your dog
If you plan to breed your dog, budget for it separately. Prenatal care, delivery and any C-section are excluded by Embrace, Healthy Paws, Lemonade, Odie, Pets Best and Spot, and Fetch excludes routine pregnancy costs while covering complications that arise after its waiting period.
Ask your vet what a pregnancy and delivery are likely to cost for your breed before you decide, including the chance of a C-section, because insurance won't carry those costs. Owners of breeds with brachycephalic syndrome on their list, such as the French Bulldog, Bulldog and Boston Terrier, should also ask about anesthesia, since the condition itself is covered only if it isn't pre-existing.
The exclusion reaches beyond the birth itself. Embrace also excludes evaluations of a dog's suitability for breeding, and every policy we checked treats breeding as a choice rather than an illness. If you are not planning to breed, spaying or neutering is routine care that the base policy leaves out as well, though some wellness add-ons pay toward it. Spay and neuter cover, by insurer.
Insurance still covers the dog for unrelated accidents and illnesses while she is pregnant. And puppies need their own policy once they are old enough: minimum enrollment ages run from 6 to 8 weeks.
Before you buy
- Search the policy for breeding, pregnancy, whelping and C-section.
- Ask whether any complications are covered, and under what conditions.
- Budget for prenatal care and delivery outside insurance.
- Plan a separate policy for each puppy you keep.
Questions owners ask
Does pet insurance cover a dog's pregnancy?
No. Embrace, Fetch, Healthy Paws, Lemonade, Odie, Pets Best and Spot all exclude breeding and pregnancy costs. Fetch covers some complications if breeding occurs after the waiting period.
Is a C-section for a dog covered by insurance?
Generally not, because it relates to pregnancy or whelping, which the insurers we checked exclude. Fetch covers complications of breeding that happens after its waiting period.
Are newborn puppies covered by the mother's policy?
No. Each puppy needs its own policy, and insurers set a minimum enrollment age of 6 to 8 weeks.
