Prescription diets are a long-term cost for many chronic conditions. Most policies exclude them; one insurer covers them.

The short answer

Mostly no. Of the seven insurers we could check, only Spot covers prescription food and supplements to treat a covered condition; Fetch covers supplements but not food, and Embrace, Healthy Paws, Lemonade, Odie and Pets Best exclude prescription food.

Medications are a separate question; most policies cover prescribed drugs for covered conditions.

Check how this applies to your breed

What this means for your dog

Prescription diets are usually lifelong. Vets often prescribe them for conditions like kidney disease, bladder stones and allergies, which are on the lists of breeds such as the Bull Terrier (kidney disease), Dalmatian and Bichon Frise (bladder stones), and the West Highland White Terrier and Miniature Schnauzer (allergies). Over years, the food becomes a steady cost.

If your breed is prone to one of these, the prescription food row is worth weighing. Spot's coverage excludes diets for prevention, weight loss, dental or general health, so it applies to treating a diagnosed, covered condition.

Embrace's policy excludes food, but its separate Wellness Rewards add-on can reimburse prescription diet food. Wellness add-ons compared.

A practical way to compare: if one of these conditions is on your breed's list, add a year of the prescribed diet to the cost of each policy you are weighing. Over the years a condition lasts, the policy that covers food can come out ahead even with a higher premium.

Before you buy

  • Search the exclusions for food, diet, supplements and vitamins.
  • If food is covered, check the conditions: only for a covered illness, and not for prevention or weight loss.
  • Check how prescribed medications are covered, and whether take-home drugs need an add-on.
  • Price a year of the diet at your vet to see how much the coverage is worth.
