The short answer

What this means for your dog

Vaccines are predictable costs, which is why insurers keep them out of the main policy. A wellness add-on is closer to a prepaid budget than insurance: it pays fixed amounts per item, up to a yearly cap. Fetch pays up to $25 per vaccine and $100 a year; Spot's Platinum pays $25 each for bordetella, DHLPP and rabies or lyme; Odie and Pets Best pay $15 for rabies plus $30 or $40 for other vaccinations or titers.

Add up the vaccines your dog needs this year at your vet's prices, with the exam and other preventive care you would buy anyway, and compare it with the add-on's cost. Puppies, with their series of shots, tend to get the most from it. When wellness plans pay for themselves.

Embrace's Wellness Rewards works differently: instead of per-vaccine amounts, it reimburses vaccinations and other preventive care up to a yearly plan amount of $300, $500 or $700. Pick the plan that matches what you actually spend on routine care.

Before you buy

  • List the vaccines your dog needs this year and your vet's price for each.
  • Check the add-on's amount per vaccine and its yearly cap.
  • Read whether the policy excludes illnesses a vaccine would have prevented.
  • Make sure accident and illness cover comes first in your budget.
