How to cancel pet insurance, and whether you get a refund
Phone, app or in writing, and whether the unused part of your premium comes back. Each insurer's published terms.
Updated October 6, 2026. Plan facts come from each insurer's published documents; each insurer's policy documents control.
The short answer
You can cancel at any time with all seven insurers we could check. Embrace, Fetch, Lemonade, Pets Best and Spot refund the unused part of the premium; Odie's help center says there is no refund after 30 days, and Healthy Paws doesn't state a refund after its free-look period.
Inside the first 30 days, with no claims, all seven give a full refund.

What this means for your dog
How you cancel differs. Embrace and Fetch ask you to call; Lemonade cancels in its app; Pets Best and Spot accept phone, email or written requests; Healthy Paws asks for written notice at least 14 days before the next payment. If you pay monthly, a late request can mean one more charge.
Cancelling has a cost beyond the premium: anything your dog was treated for becomes pre-existing under any future policy. For a dog with a chronic condition, such as heart disease in a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, a new insurer will exclude it. If price is the problem, a higher deductible or a lower reimbursement rate is usually better than cancelling.
If you are switching insurers, buy the new policy first and cancel the old one only after the new waiting periods end. How to switch without a gap.
Before you buy
- Check how the insurer accepts cancellations: phone, app, email or in writing.
- Ask whether you get a pro-rata refund, and when it is paid.
- Cancel before the next billing date to avoid another charge.
- If switching, keep the old policy until the new one's waiting periods have passed.
