Does pet insurance cover cancer?

Cancer is one of the most expensive claims a dog can have. What each insurer says it covers.

Updated October 2, 2026. Plan facts come from each insurer's published documents; each insurer's policy documents control.

The short answer

Yes. All seven insurers we could check cover cancer treatment on their accident and illness plans, and Embrace, Fetch, Healthy Paws, Pets Best and Spot name both chemotherapy and radiation.

As with any illness, cancer that showed signs before the policy started is pre-existing and excluded.

What this means for your dog

Cancer is on the condition list of breeds such as the Golden Retriever, Boxer, Bernese Mountain Dog, Rottweiler and Labrador Retriever. Treatment combines surgery, chemotherapy, radiation and repeat visits, so it tests the annual limit more than almost any other claim. Annual limits by insurer.

Read the details. Embrace says chemotherapy may fall under its optional prescription coverage, Lemonade excludes experimental treatments, and Pets Best excludes recurrences of certain cancers your dog had before. An accident-only plan doesn't cover cancer at all.

A diagnosis made before the policy starts is excluded for good, and premiums rise with age. Enrolling while your dog is young and healthy is what keeps cancer covered later. Insuring an older dog.

Treatment can run across two policy years. Because all seven insurers we could check use an annual deductible, you may pay it twice for one course of treatment, and each year's payouts count against that year's limit. Factor that in when you choose the deductible and limit.

If your dog is diagnosed, ask the insurer early which parts of the treatment plan it will cover, and keep every invoice and the oncologist's records together for the claims.

Before you buy

  • Check that chemotherapy, radiation and surgery are listed as covered, and whether drugs need a prescription add-on.
  • Ask whether cancer has its own limit or falls under the annual limit.
  • Read exclusions for experimental treatments and recurrences.
  • Pick an annual limit that can absorb months of treatment.
