Does pet insurance cover euthanasia and cremation?
A hard question to ask, and policies answer it very differently. What each insurer says about end-of-life costs.
Updated October 6, 2026. Plan facts come from each insurer's published documents; each insurer's policy documents control.
The short answer
Policies differ: Spot covers euthanasia, burial and cremation; Embrace, Healthy Paws and Pets Best cover euthanasia when it is needed because of a covered condition but not cremation; Lemonade sells an end-of-life add-on worth up to $500; Fetch excludes both unless the vet recommends euthanasia; and Odie excludes cremation and burial.

What this means for your dog
The usual condition is that euthanasia follows a covered illness or injury and is recommended by your vet for humane reasons. If the condition behind it was pre-existing or excluded, the euthanasia may not be covered either.
Aftercare is where policies differ most. Spot covers burial and cremation but not funeral costs, urns or memorial items; Lemonade's add-on covers euthanasia, cremation and memorial items up to $500 without a deductible; the others we checked exclude cremation and burial. If this matters to you, it can tip the choice between two otherwise similar policies.
For older dogs, and for breeds with shorter typical lifespans like the Great Dane or Bernese Mountain Dog (each breed page lists its lifespan), it is worth reading this clause when you buy, rather than at the hardest moment. Insuring an older dog.

- Check whether euthanasia must follow a covered condition or a vet recommendation.
